Operating from the Finnish town of Espoo, near capital Helsinki, Nokia is a hugely successful company that has been manufacturing mobile phones since the early 1980’s, although the company was developed a century before that as a paper manufacturer and electricity generator.  Having sold more than a billion phones worldwide, Nokia remain the largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world today despite some stiff competition.

In 1987 the Nokia mobile phones produced an iconic phone called the Mobira Cityman, which became an instant classic.  With their distinctive Nokia ringtone and ever refined good looks, Nokia mobile phones are famously easy to use and the company went on to dominate the market throughout the end of the 20th century and beyond.  The Nokia 1100 model, which first launched in 2003, went on to become the biggest selling handset in the world. 

By the early 2000s, Nokia had entered the smartphone market.  Competitors such as Apple, Blackberry and Android manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC and LG were gaining larger and larger shares of the emerging smartphone boom.  The Nokia 7710 was launched as Nokia’s first touch screen phone in 2007 and was a big seller.

Nokia’s loyal customers have helped the company to retain its place as market leader but their new smartphones, which are powered by Symbian^3, are so far not as successful as their smartphone rivals.  However recent models such as the Nokia E6, and the Nokia X7 and Nokia N9, featuring super AMOLED screens, have garnered positive feedback.

Ten years ago if you asked anybody to name a mobile phone manufacturer, you can bet Nokia would have been mentioned.  The manufacturer was the world’s biggest at the start of the last decade and its 3210 model revolutionised mobile technology.  Ten years on and the competition have caught up.  Companies such as HTC and Sony Ericsson have been born, while Apple and Samsung have produced hit after hit; leaving the Finnish giant playing catch-up.

In order to reverse the trend, Nokia has recently announced plans for the N9, the first MeeGo-powered smartphone, and it certainly packs a punch.  The phone comes with up to a massive 64GB internal memory as well as PowerVR SGX530 graphics, a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 OMAP 3630 processor and 1GB of RAM to ensure an instantaneous response to any user request.  While Nokia mobile phones have sold poorly over the past couple of years, the N9, which is to be launched later in 2011, could certainly spark the reversal of fortunes that the company so desperately needs.

Furthermore, Nokia has recently announced plans to launch an £80-million advertising campaign to promote its partnership with the Windows OS.  As of yet, Nokia has not revealed which handsets will be running Windows, although the massive advertising push will certainly ensure tat the handsets will be known.  After running the, now arcane, Symbian operating system on its phones, which triggered massive losses, Nokia hopes that the increasingly popular Windows OS will once again propel the manufacturer to the forefront of mobile technology.

While the mobile phone market is being flooded with cheap mobile phones coming out of companies like ZTE Corp and small Chinese manufacturers, Nokia has gone to work to provide a branded alternative to these unbranded cheap mobile phones.

One such model is the Nokia C2-03, a dual SIM phone using Symbian, which targets lower end and emerging markets by allowing users to share a single handset, but with different mobile numbers.

The C2-03 is a touch and type handset, which combines touchscreen technology with a keypad. Features include maps and location based services, both provided by Nokia without having to sign up for an expensive contract with a service provider.

Touch and type phones are rare in the cheap mobile phone end of the market, so through the C2-03, Nokia is offering emerging consumer markets something they have not been privy to before. This includes countries like China, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil, Vietnam and India.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Nokia is also introducing the N9, a phone that features a completely touch-oriented interface, with virtually no physical buttons. Through touch, the user can take a photograph, activate headphones and other activities normally requiring buttons, all through near field communications technology. The Nokia N9 uses Nokia’s MeeGo operating system, which is the company’s alternative to its Symbian OS. In the near future, Nokia will also start offering phones using the Windows Phone 7 OS.

Nokia mobile phones have enjoyed a lot of popularity, and especially in recent years Nokia mobile phone reviews have been largely positive.  The phones come in a variety of price ranges and with a variety of features.  They are also available in a variety of styles, ranging from bar phones to flip phones, as well as tablets.

Nokia 6303i Classic

Nokia is the largest manufacturer of phones.  Among the vast array of products that Nokia offers are several popular types of smartphones such as the E7 and the N8.

Though Nokia mobile phones are great for both business and pleasure, the Nokia E7 is primarily a business phone.  It has a sleek, professional look and feel and a QWERTY keyboard for easy messaging and typing.  Additionally, the phone contains an 8-megapixel built in camera that allows for high-quality picture and video taking.  The battery life of the Nokia E7 is good, allowing for extended usage in between charges.  However, some consumers find that the phone can be slow and that the camera display itself has a lower-quality resolution.   

A superior smartphone model, the Nokia N8, improves upon the software platform of the Nokia E7.  The Nokia N8 operates on the Symbian 3 platform, which allows for an all-around favourable experience.  Plus, the phone contains an excellent camera that delivers top-notch quality video and pictures.  The hardware of this smartphone is also decidedly solid.  The 3G support (for T-Mobile and AT&T) allows N8 users to run programs from any physical location.  Consumers can even get turn-by-turn navigation using an app called Ovi Maps.  One potential downside is that this phone, with all of its impressive features, can be rather costly for consumers in terms of price.  Also, while the platform and interface are advanced in comparison with the E7, they are not quite as easy to use as some of the smartphones offered by Nokia’s competition.

The Nokia N8 is the premier handset of Nokia mobile phones when it comes to snapping pictures.  This is the camera phone for those who prefer high-end capabilities in their mobile phone cameras.

The 12-megapixel camera is a powerhouse of technological features.  Picture quality on the highest setting is remarkable in clarity, contrast and depth.  The Xenon flash enables users to take pictures without ambient light and still produce a picture of excellent quality.

Nokia equipped the handset with a wide range of functions and settings for the camera.  Users can reduce photos to 3-megapixels for uploading to Facebook or take a detailed close-up with the macro shot mode.  Along with standard tone and contrast functions, the Nokia N8 has a vivid colour mode for high dynamic range, and has dither and posterise features for fun.

The HD video recorder performs seamlessly, and consumers can watch the videos on any HD television screen.  The Nokia N8 is a perfect choice for those who rely on their mobile phones to act as a camcorder.

However much the camera is the focus, Nokia has also put an impressive package together with the Nokia N8.  A 3.5-inch touch screen is responsive with pinch to zoom, and bottom buttons on the screen allow for easy navigation of the three home screens.

Running the Symbian 3 interface, Nokia offers apps and phone functions for further personalization.  They then added a music player with remote control, headphones, preset sounds, 16 GB onboard memory and a microSD slot.

Nokia mobile phones have been market leaders for almost as long as mobile phones have existed.  The company produces good quality handsets that are an excellent value for the money and they are always at the forefront with the latest technology.  Stiff competition from other manufacturers means Nokia always goes that extra step to ensuring their customers are happy with every purchase.

The Nokia X3 is no exception.  It is one of the most affordable handsets on the market today, and while easy on the wallet, it does not compromise on features.  While some may consider the keyboard not quite up to standard, many people agree that the Nokia X3 is a good phone that comes at a very reasonable price.

The Nokia X3 has several attractive features and functions.  Mobile phones come in all shapes and sizes and the Nokia X3 is considered one of the more basic looking of Nokia’s models.  This model includes a 3.2 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, which is on par with high quality cameras included in other new handsets being released at the moment.  The phone also has an FM radio, integrated stereo speakers and a music player, so users can listen to all their favourite tunes while on the go.

The phone also allows the use of voice commands for making phone calls – a technology that even some of the more expensive mobile handsets still do not have – and a voice recorder. The Nokia X3 also comes with flight mode so that it can be used safely on board aircraft.

What it Has

As far as mobile phones go, this one has some sought after features, including a 4-inch screen that is massive in comparison to some of the smaller screens offered on other handsets.  It has all of the specs that you would want: AMOLED touchscreen, 3G high speed internet surfing capability, a camera and video recording, and a full QWERTY keypad.  We like the sharp look to this slider phone and in particular the different colour of the body.  If you want something that’s not just the ordinary black or silver and glass appearance, then this is definitely a little different, and that’s a good thing in the case of the Nokia E7, giving you options of orange, blue, green, silver and dark grey.  The 8-megapixel camera is brilliant and takes some beautiful pictures. The F-secure anti-theft protection is especially attractive to anyone who keeps loads of important data and contacts stored, because it allows you to remotely lock and wipe your mobile if it gets lost or stolen.  The ‘Clear Black’ technology also makes it easier to see the screen in direct light or sunlight, which is a nice feature here.

What It Lacks

Not much, really.  This mobile phone is a hit in almost all areas, except handset deals for this one are limited right now according to research.

Conclusion

There may not be many great deals right now being offered to go along with the Nokia E7 but it’s a brilliant mobile that hits all of the right points.
